1941 – 1942 Letters from Senegal 4 DBLE

During the Second World War a soldier of the French Foreign Legion serving with the 4e DBLE sent letters to:

H. Hasinger who had as address:
48 Avenue Gambetta Graulhet (Tarn) France.

The handwriting of this soldier is not one of easiest to read so it took me some time to decipher the above.
The same is valid for his own name which might read STERCKX.

Postage stamps placed in Senegal are equally difficult to read being both incomplete and washed out.
The same applies for the unit stamps.

Most likely we are dealing with the cover of a letter sent in 1941 (left).
Based on the stamp on the back the other was sent in 1942 (right).

Interesting to notice is that in 1941 the unit seemed not to have it own dedicated stamp and used that of the Vaguemestre of the 1er REI. It was clearly already worn out, or alternative local heat and humidity caused its run out appearance.
The in red inkt stamped 1942 4e DBLE Vaguemestre one is in comparison crisp and sharp.
What also could point to the fact that the cover on the left is the older one is that the cost of sending the letter was 3,75 Francs and that of the 1942 4,50 Francs.

Unfortunately the soldier was very concise in his adres no initial of this first name and indicating his unit only as L.E. ( Legion etrangere ). As such identifying this soldier of the legion will be a challenge.

Stil some interesting documents of this rather small unit.
