Introduction
Many years ago I started to make a database of photographs of vehicles from the French Foreign Legion as a kind of research tool to enable the identification of units, places etc.
Despite the fact that this database is already quite extensive,
it only in a few occasions could facilitate an identification.
In a post published on 16 mai 2024 I showed photograph of a Dodge WC62/63 6×6.
Despite the clearly visible registration number 467362, the vehicle name “Bison” and
a part of unit badge, I could stil not identify to which unit this Dodge belonged.
Positive identification
More encouraging was this recent identification.
April 2025 a series of photo’s was offered for sale on the auction site Delcampe. The description indicated that the photo’s were taken in Algérie and Maroc around 1955. Clearly visible on one of the photographs was the registration number of a M3 half-track, 808126.
In my database I had a photograph of a half-track with the same registration number. It had been published in a brochure published for celebrating Camerone in 1957. what made this even more interesting is that the unit to which the vehicle was assigned was mentioned, the 2CP du 4REI.
As such we now also now that the men depicted on the photograph highly likely belonged to this unit.
